The King

Donkey Kong

Donkey Kong is not only Nintendo's first real smash hit for the company, but marks the introduction for two of their most popular mascots: Mario (originally "Jumpman") and Donkey Kong. The game is a platform-action game that has Mario scale four different industrial themed levels (construction zone, cement factory, an elevator-themed level, and removing rivets from girders) in an attempt to save the damsel in distress, Pauline, from the big ape before the timer runs out. Donkey Kong is also notable for being one of the first complete narratives in video game form, told through simplistic cut scenes that advance the story.

Donkey Kong Junior

Donkey Kong Junior is the direct sequel to Donkey Kong. In this game, Mario plays the antagonist, finally having captured Donkey Kong, and has put the ape in a locked cage. As Donkey Kong Jr., players will have to make their way through four different levels (Vines, Springboard, Chains and Mario's Hideout) in an attempt to find keys to free the little monkey's father.

Donkey Kong 3

Stanley is a bugman. Donkey Kong has taken refuge in his greenhouse and it is now up to Stanley to stop the ape from stirring up any more insects that will soon destroy his flowers. Stanley saves the flowers by spraying bug spray on Donkey Kong.

Donkey Kong is a Game Boy game which starts out with the premise of being a straight remake of the original Donkey Kong arcade game. Although at first it appears to be just a port, the familiar levels from the arcade game are just a prelude to the real platform jumping adventure. There are 96 levels spread out over 12 worlds. These levels are much more complex than the originals, featuring scrolling backgrounds, numerous objects to collect, and enemies to avoid. Along the way, you will encounter several boss style battles with Donkey Kong, as well. When played on a Super Game Boy, the game is colorized, digitized speech is added and the ending music takes advantage of the SNES sound chip.

Donkey Kong Country

Donkey Kong Country is a side scrolling platformer by British developers Rare in 1994. It featured revolutionary pre-rendered 3D graphics that give the game a very unique look compared to most other games on consoles at the time. The two playable characters featured in the game are the titular character, Donkey Kong and his nephew, Diddy Kong. Together the two swing, climb, jump, swim, cartwheel, ride animals, and blast out of barrels on their way to recover their stolen bannanas from the evil King K. Rool and his Kremling army. The adventure takes you through a variety of different environments and levels that continually change up gameplay. Donkey Kong Country also provides plenty of opportunities for exploration with almost every level having a multitude of collectible, shortcuts, and hidden bonus areas.

Mario vs. Donkey Kong

After years of apparent goodwill, Mario and Donkey Kong are at it again--this time, on Game Boy Advance. Donkey Kong has stolen all the Mini-Mario toys from the Mario Toy Co., and now it's up to Mario to hunt down his longtime nemesis and retrieve the pilfered goods. As Mario, you must race through challenging levels while finding keys and releasing Mini Marios before time runs out. Along the way, you'll master new moves that can help you overcome new puzzles.

Crazy Kong

Crazy Kong is an arcade game created by Falcon, released in 1981 and is similar to Nintendo's Donkey Kong. Although commonly mistaken as a bootleg version, the game is officially licensed for non-US markets and is based on different hardware.

The game retains all of the gameplay elements of Donkey Kong, but has all of the graphics redrawn and re-colorized. They were allowed to produce a certain amount of printed circuit boards (PCB) and were banned from exporting them. Falcon breached this agreement by producing more than 9000 excess units and also by exporting them to the US. On January 29, 1982, Nintendo terminated their license agreement.

It had a second version called Crazy Kong Part II.

In the early 2000s, incomplete prototype versions of Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong Jr. for ColecoVision were discovered. Both cartridges actually postdated the ColecoVision releases and were seemingly ports of the versions from the Coleco Adam computer, which featured more levels and cutscenes. The games were re-compiled into hacked ROMs titled "Super DK!" and "Super DK Junior" respectively; the unaltered ROMs were never released.

This game is a port of the original Donkey Kong arcade, which is different from the NES version.

Donkey Kong is an action game released in 1981 by Nintendo. Avoid a variety of obstacles while heading through a construction site to make it to the top and rescue Lady. Use the hammer to destroy the barrels and fire coming towards you to earn more points.

Donkey Kong is a Multi Screen Game & Watch game released in 1982. It was based on the arcade game Donkey Kong, with gameplay based only on 25m, the first stage from the arcade version. This was the first Game and Watch game to be based on pre-existing Nintendo characters, and it was the first video game system to include the D-pad, a feature of all future Nintendo systems. The game unit's model is DK-52, with the DK standing for Donkey Kong. The game was a huge success, selling over 1,000,000 copies worldwide.

The Atari 2600 port of the hit arcade Donkey Kong differs from the original version in gameplay and has two stages instead of the original four.

This is the ColecoVision port of Donkey Kong. The main differences with the original arcade game are the absence of 50m, cutscenes and enemy placement.

The Coleco Tabletop port of Donkey Kong has many differences from the original, the main ones being the exclusion of both 50m and 75m.

The Donkey Kong port for Intellivision was developed by Coleco, and lacks 50m and 75m. It is also very visually different from the original arcade game.

The Coleco Adam port of Donkey Kong was developed by Coleco and released in 1984.

The Commodore 64 port of Donkey Kong is very much faithful to the original arcade port, with some small differences. This port was developed by Atari.

The second official port of Donkey Kong for the Commodore 64 was developed by Ocean Software. It is more faithful to the original game.

The Atari 8-bit computer port of Donkey Kong was developed by Atari, Inc.

The Commodore VIC-20 port of Donkey Kong was developed by Atari, Inc., under the Atarisoft label.

The Texas Instruments TI-99/4A of Donkey Kong was developed by Atari, Inc., under the Atarisoft label.

The MS-DOS port of Donkey Kong was developed by Atari, Inc., under the Atarisoft label. It was marketed for the IBM-PC computers.

The Apple II port of Donkey Kong was developed by Atari, Inc., under the Atarisoft label. It was released as a floppy disk.

The Amstrad CPC port of Donkey Kong was developed by Ocean Software.

The MSX port of Donkey Kong was developed by Ocean Software.

The ZX Spectrum port of Donkey Kong was developed by Ocean Software.

An unreleased port of Donkey Kong for the BBC Micro. Not much is known about this port, being documented by The Atarisoft FAQ (unofficial source) and a blog post from an ex-employee.

Donkey Kong Pac-Man Crossover

In this romhack Donkey Kong kidnaps Pauline again but gets help from the four Pac-Man ghosts Blinky, Pinky, Inky and Clyde. Jumpman and Pac-Man must join forces to save Pauline. Each board contains a number of pellets that must all be picked up before the board can be finished. You start each board playing as Jumpman, but you can temporarily transform to Pac-Man by picking up a power pellet. When you play as Pac-Man you are invincible and can chase and catch the ghosts. Make the Jumpman/Pac-Man team a success and save Pauline, but ... don't forget to pick up all pellets !!!

Donkey Kong Land is a Jump & Run classic, developed by Rareware and released by Nintendo for the Game Boy in June 1995.

Cranky Kong, jealous of all the success Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong have had from Donkey Kong Country on the SNES, challenges the Kongs to beat another adventure on an 8-bit system (Game Boy). As King K. Rool agrees with Cranky and steals the bananas again, Donkey & Diddy Kong set out to go through another adventure!

Donkey Kong Land 2

Donkey Kong Land 2 is the first sequel to Donkey Kong Land for the Nintendo Game Boy and was released in 1996.

The story mainly complies to its SNES counterpart; K. Rool kidnapped Donkey Kong, demanding the entire Banana Hoard as ransom, so it's up to Diddy Kong and Dixie Kong to rescue their kidnapped pal. A wild assortment of friendly animals like Rambi the Rhino, Squitter the Spider, Squawks the Parrot, Rattly the Rattlesnake and Enguarde the Swordfish help the two little monkeys in their adventurous mission. Each exciting level is filled with special traps, hidden items and dastardly Kremlings! Prepare yourself for the biggest Game Boy adventure yet!

Super Mario Bros.

A side scrolling 2D platformer and first entry in the Super Mario franchise, Super Mario Bros. follows Italian plumber Mario as he treks across many levels of platforming challenges featuring hostile enemies to rescue Princess Peach from the evil king Bowser.

Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels

Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels is a direct sequel to Super Mario Bros. Not to be confused with the western Super Mario Bros. 2, this sequel to Super Mario Bros. is very much an expansion to the original, with many reused graphics and concepts, though new ones are also present. The game was initially released for the Japan-only Family Computer Disk System.

Super Mario Bros. 2

Super Mario Bros. 2, 2D platformer and sequel to Super Mario Bros. (1985), features 4 selectable characters (Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Toad) as they navigate the dream world of Subcon to defeat the evil toad king Wart. Super Mario Bros. 2 features different ways interacting with enemies and the world, including an object carrying mechanic and more intricate level designs.

Super Mario Bros. 3

Super Mario Bros. 3, the third entry in the Super Mario Bros. series and Super Mario franchise, sees Mario or Luigi navigate a nonlinear world map containing platforming levels and optional minigames and challenges. The game features more diverse movement options and new items alongside more complex level designs and boss battles.

Super Mario Land

Super Mario Land is the first Mario's outing on the Game Boy. It is a side-scrolling platformer much in the vein of the previous Super Mario Bros. This time, Mario must save Princess Daisy, rather than Princess Toadstool, from her kidnapper Tatanga, a mysterious spaceman. The game follows largely the same formula of its aforementioned predecessor, with Mario defeating enemies by jumping on them and collecting coins and power ups by hitting floating blocks, with each world leading up to a boss fight which is defeated using by collapsing the floor. A unique feature of this installment is two scrolling shoot-'em-up levels, the first of which Mario pilots a submarine, and the second an aeroplane.

Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins

Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins is a platforming game for the Game Boy and the sequel to Super Mario Land. It also marks the debut of Mario's self-proclaimed arch rival Wario, who would later become a recurring character in the Mario series as well as a protagonist in his own series. The game features new graphics, power-ups, challenges, and a completely original storyline.

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island is a platform video game acting as a prequel to 1990's Super Mario World. The game casts players as Yoshi as he escorts Baby Mario through 48 levels in order to reunite him with his brother Luigi, who had been kidnapped by Baby Bowser's minions. As a Super Mario series platformer, Yoshi runs and jumps to reach the end of the level while solving puzzles and collecting items. In a style new to the series, the game has a hand-drawn aesthetic and is the first to have Yoshi as its main character. The game introduces his signature abilities to flutter jump, produce eggs from swallowed enemies, and transform into vehicles.

Ikegami Tsushinki Co., Ltd. (池上通信機株式会社, Ikegami Tsūshinki Kabushiki-gaisha) (TYO: 6771) is a Japanese manufacturer of professional and broadcast television equipment, especially professional video cameras, both for electronic news gathering and studio use. The company was founded in 1946.

In the early 1980s, Ikegami developed arcade video games as a subcontractor to Japanese video game companies. Among the games they developed are Computer Othello, Block Fever, Monkey Magic, Congo Bongo, Popeye, Donkey Kong, Radar Scope, Sheriff, Space Fever, Space Firebird, Space Demon, Heli Fire, Sky Skipper, Space Launcher, and Zaxxon. At that time, computer programs were not recognized as copyrightable material. According to these sources, Ikegami proceeded to sue Nintendo for unauthorized duplication of the Donkey Kong program code for the latter's creation of Donkey Kong Junior (1983, Tokyo District Court), but it was not until 1989 that the Tokyo High Court gave a verdict that acknowledged the originality of program code. In 1990, Ikegami and Nintendo reached a settlement, terms of which were never disclosed.
