Pac-Man

Pac-Man is a 1980 maze action video game developed and released by Namco for arcades. It is considered one of the classics of the medium, virtually synonymous with video games, and an icon of 1980s popular culture. Players control Pac-Man, who must eat all the dots inside an enclosed maze while avoiding four colored ghosts. Eating large flashing dots called Power Pellets causes the ghosts to temporarily turn blue, allowing Pac-Man to eat them for bonus points.

Toc-Man and his ghosts have kidnapped Pac-Man's friends, Ms. Pac-Man, Pac Jr., Baby Pac, Professor Pac, Pooka, and Chomp-Chomp the dog! Pac-Man must venture to Toc-Man's lair on Ghost Island to rescue his friends!

Hidden through this 3D adventure game, Pac-Man faces challenging puzzles and games that have appeared in Pac-Man's previous games. Many things in this game are a tribute to original games and even Inky, Blinky, Pinky, and Clyde are back for another chance to get Pac-Man.

Atari 2600 Port of Pac-Man
The player controls Pac-Man through a maze, eating pac-dots (also called pellets). When all pac-dots are eaten, Pac-Man is taken to the next stage. Between some stages one of three intermission animations plays. Four enemies (Blinky, Pinky, Inky and Clyde) roam the maze, trying to catch Pac-Man. If an enemy touches Pac-Man, a life is lost and the Pac-Man itself withers and dies. When all lives have been lost, the game ends. Pac-Man is awarded a single bonus life at 10,000 points by default.

Near the corners of the maze are four larger, flashing dots known as power pellets that provide Pac-Man with the temporary ability to eat the enemies. The enemies turn deep blue, reverse direction and usually move more slowly. When an enemy is eaten, its eyes remain and return to the center box where it is regenerated in its normal color. Blue enemies flash white to signal that they are about to become dangerous again and the length of time for which the enemies remain vulnerable varies from one stage to the next, generally becoming shorter as the game progresses. In later stages, the enemies go straight to flashing, bypassing blue, which means that they can only be eaten for a short amount of time, although they still reverse direction when a power pellet is eaten; in even later stages, the ghosts do not become edible (i.e., they do not change color and still make Pacman lose a life on contact), but they still reverse direction.

Pac-Man Championship Edition

Pac-Man Championship Edition is similar in basic gameplay to the original 1980 Pac-Man: players have to eat dots, while avoiding the four ghosts that roam around the maze. Championship Edition, however, also brings many gameplay differences.

The game was designed by Tōru Iwatani, the creator of the classic original 1980 arcade game Pac-Man, and it was Iwatani's final game before his retirement.

Pac-Man Plus

Pac-Man Plus is an Action game, developed and published by Bally Midway, which was released in 1982. Gameplay is nearly identical the original Pac-Man. However, the game features new gimmicks that make the game harder, such as faster speed, disappearing mazes, and invisible enemies.

Jelly Monsters

Jelly Monsters was originally developed as a port of Pac-Man by HAL Laboratory for Commodore Japan, who held the home computer rights for Pac-Man in Japan at the time. When Commodore released it internationally the title was changed to Jelly Monsters, since Atari held the home computer rights for North America.

Commodore’s Jelly Monsters was released in 1981, a year before Atari would release Pac-Man for the 2600. Atari quickly sued Commodore to have the title removed from shelves and won.

The World's Biggest Pac-Man

30th Anniversary of Pac-Man

This version of Pac-Man was released to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the first game, in a partnership between Google and Bandai Namco. It was featured in Google's first page in May 21 and 22, 2010, but it is still playable in the game's its own page. Both Pac-man and Ms. Pac-man are playable (the latter appears by inserting another coin). The game was developed by Google's Marcin Wichary and Ryan Germick.

Pac-Man Live Studio

PAC-MAN LIVE STUDIO is a game published by Amazon playable on the Twitch website. It lets you play co-op multiplayer PAC-MAN with friends online and publish mazes to the community. It was created in celebration of PAC-MAN’s 40th Anniversary.

Arcade Archives: Pac-Man

Pac-Man is an action game released by Namco in 1980. Players clear stages by eating all Pac-Dots in each round without getting caught by any of the four ghosts, each with its own personality. Eating Power Pellets will let you attack the ghosts, so time them carefully!

Reese's Pac-Man

Reese's Pac-Man is an online game released in 2017 to promote Reese's peanut butter cups. It is loosely based on a TV commercial aired around the same time, with Pac-Man and the Ghosts being replaced by Reese's cups. In addition to an HTML5-based release, it was also playable via Snapchat.

World's Largest Pac-Man

World's Largest Pac-Man is an arcade game. It is an enhanced version of the original Pac-Man. The cabinet also plays Galaga, and the machine can be set to play either of them or only one of them. However, Galaga does not seem to be enhanced in any way.

Pac-Man Arrangement

A remake of the original Pac-Man, with modernized presentation and gameplay.

Pac-Man Arrangement is a 2005 video game, initially released as part of the Namco Museum Battle Collection compilation for the PSP. It shares its name with a very similar Pac-Man game from a decade prior - to avoid confusion, some later re-releases were renamed to Pac-Man Remix.

The Tiger handheld Large Screen line port of Pac-Man. It was released in 1984.

Crazy Otto

Originally, Ms. Pac-Man started as an unauthorized hack of Pac-Man called Crazy Otto by General Computer Corporation, featuring a Pac-Man-like character with a blue eye and legs. To avoid another lawsuit with Atari (which they had previously received for creating "Super Missile Attack", a Missile Command hack), G.C.C. presented the game to Bally Midway for approval of release. Midway, impatient for Namco to release the then-upcoming Super Pac-Man, purchased Crazy Otto for their own release, transformed into Ms. Pac-Man.

A canceled port from Atarisoft, which was planned for a 1983 release. Its cancellation was due to being arguably superior to the Atari 5200 version, with Atari believing that releasing the game would have effected sales of their own console(s). A prototype version has been dumped.

The Namco Museum port of Pac-Man.

This version of the game, introduced in Namco Museum Volume 1 (1995), is notable for being perhaps the most frequently rereleased "official" version of Pac-Man from 1995 to 2005. This version of the game often featured a border based on the classic Puckman artwork surrounding it. Being based off the original's source code, it is mostly faithful to the arcade version, but a few things were altered in gameplay:

Pinky always aims exactly four spaces in front of Pac-Man when in chase mode (in the original, this became four spaces up and four spaces to the left when Pac-Man was facing up, due to a glitch). Inky's behavior has been considerably altered; he exclusively aims for Blinky's position in chase mode.

The ghosts' eyes will not travel up through the one-way paths when returning to regenerate. When a ghost is sent back to the Ghost Home to regenerate, they will always come back out instantly, even if Pac-Man lost a life on the current round. (Incidentally, this fixes a glitch that can occur in the original where Pac-Man can trap Pinky, Inky, and Clyde in the Ghost Home.). Ghosts will exit the Ghost Home to the right if their target position happens to be there. In the original game, they will only exit to the right if the behavior mode (i.e. scatter, chase, frightened) changes while they are in the Ghost Home.

If a bonus fruit appears and Pac-Man eats a ghost, the timer that controls how long the fruit stays onscreen halts with everything else. This makes it impossible for fruit to disappear while Pac-Man is eating a ghost.

The Pac-Man Coleco Tabletop is a tabletop arcade machine released by Coleco in 1981. It is based on handheld LCD game technology, and was intended for home use.

Tomy LSI Game Pac-Man is a handheld LCD game released by Tomy in 1981. It is a conversion of the original arcade Pac-Man from 1980.

Pac-Man by GSN is a Pac-Man game that was created for, and is only playable through, GSN's Sparcade / WorldWinner mobile apps. It allowed players to play a variation of Pac-Man competitively to earn real money. The game was taken down from the service and has not been ported as of yet.

In 2002, Denki released an obscure port of Pac-Man to Sky Active's now defunct service, Sky Games. The game could only be accessible by either purchasing a Play-to-Play or Game Pass payment.

Moff Pac-Man

Moff Pac-Man was a title created by Moff in 2016 to help promote their smart bracelet. It was advertised as having the player be the controller for Pac-Man. The gameplay is very similar to the original Pac-Man, other than the way Pac-Man is controlled.

Hello Kitty Pac-Man

The Hello Kitty ♥ Pac-Man video game was first released in 2017 as limited-time event for Pac-Man + Tournaments. It was later republished in 2020 as part of the World's Smallest Tiny Arcade line by Super Impulse. These are the features found in the Hello Kitty game that differ from the original arcade:

All mazes have been changed in unique shapes and colors, such as one resembling a rubber duck.
The ghosts have white bows on their heads.
Some levels only feature three ghosts instead of four.
The giant Pac-Man in the first intermission is replaced with Hello Kitty; this is the only time she actually appears in-game.

Tiny Arcade tabletop edition is the newest addition to the Tiny Arcade line, the world's smallest full function, licensed retro video arcade games. Tiny Arcade tabletops are based on the "cocktail table" Style arcades that invaded restaurants and bars starting in the 1980s.

Based on Sega Genesis clone hardware. Compared to the non-40th model, it is gold instead of yellow, and the side artwork is a lenticular print.

Pac-Man in a Tin is a pocket-sized tin contains the classic arcade game in all its 8-bit glory.

Pac-Man Colour Handheld LCD Game

Uses a light sensor to project the screen onto a mirror. An alternate, seemingly unauthorized version was produced (by Zeon Tech themselves) titled "Arcade Classic", which features Pac-Man wearing a cowboy hat.

Pac-Man 256

Pac-Man 256 is an official hack of the original Pac-Man starting right before Level 256; not to be confused with the 2015 game.

It was only released in Pac-Man Connect and Play.

Red Bull Pac-Man

Red Bull Pac-Man is a game released in 2018 to advertise Red Bull energy drinks. It is a modified version of Pac-Man which featured new mazes and power-ups.

The game was released as an arcade machine, which was distributed in gas stations and department stores. It was also available as a downloadable pack for the iOS and Android version of Pac-Man, accessed via a code which was on actual Red Bull cans.

Pretz Pac-Man

Pretz Pac-Man is an HTML game released in 2017 to promote the Japanese snack Pretz. It is based on the original arcade game, but Pac-Man eats Pretz in a maze with a giant capital letter in the center. A code from the Pretz box would be entered to unlock access to the game.

Eme-Man

Eme-Man is a Pac-Man game released in 2017 on the Japanese Coca-Cola app; it promotes the Georgia European line of coffee products. Gameplay is almost identical to the original Pac-Man, but the Ghosts are slower, Fruits are coffee products, Power Pellets are coffee beans, Pac-Dots are red, and the maze is a shade of cyan (identical to Pac-Man Plus's maze color).

PA-3 X Pac-Man Special Game

PA-3 X Pac-Man Special Game is an online game released in 2018 to promote PA-3, a yogurt released by Meiji Dairies. The game is just a recreation of the first level of Pac-Man with food surrounding the maze. In addition to the new maze graphics, there is a form of Stamina bar that decreases over time. The lower the stamina gets, the slower Pac-Man moves. However, eating a fruit (or PA-3 bottle) will restore the meter and Pac-Man's speed to full.

Morinaga Pac-Man mini

Morinaga Pac-Man mini is an online game first published in March of 2020. Released by Morinaga, it promotes their "Hi-Chew Mini" and "Caramel Mini" candies. While defunct, this game is still fully playable via the Internet Archive.

The Hi-Chew and Caramel Mini candies encouraged "flavor mixing" by eating two specific flavors at once, forming a "new" flavor when combined. The game is adapted from the arcade original, though the Power Pellets are replaced with the respective candies; the Ghosts will turn into the actual candy flavors formed by mixing.

There are both "Normal" and "Special" game modes. In a standard game, the maze would be randomly selected to be either a Hi-Chew or Caramel maze. In the special game, the two mazes appear side-by-side, both being played at once. The special game was accessed via the UPC code on an actual candy box; this can still be played today by entering a known code, 166 and 001.

Sabritas Pac-Man

Sabritas Pac-Man was released in collaboration with Sabritas; effectively the Mexican version of Frito-Lay. During this promotion, Pac-Man Tazos were included in specially-marked potato chip bags, alongside a giveaway promotion and a special online game.

LOL: Hasse toh Phasse x Pac-Man

LOL - Hasse toh Phasse x Pac-Man (sometimes shortened to just "LOL Pac-Man") was a game released in 2021, based on an Amazon Prime video series. It was a very poor quality version of Pac-Man, where the player controlled one of ten "Hasse toh Phasse" cast members' heads.

Several newer Pac-Man handheld releases (from the late 2010s onward) feature an original port of the game running on “Firecore” Genesis clone hardware. This port is credited to Piko Interactive in its ROM header, and was reportedly developed by Shiru. The game seems to have considerable slowdown if running on standard Genesis hardware.
The port features three video modes, one of which has the screen rotated on its side (creating an arcade-perfect pixel layout). Different consoles will utilize one of the three modes depending on its form factor.

Pizza Hut Arcade: Pac-Man

Pizza Hut Arcade: Pac-Man is a mobile browser game by Pizza Hut made for their Pac-Man pizza promotion. The game is a port of the original Pac-Man but using AR camera functionality.

A Pac-Man port for Texas Instruments TI-99.

NABU is an obscure computer system produced in 1983, most notable for featuring an early equivalent of internet connectivity. A port of Pac-Man (among numerous other games) is built-in to the computer itself.

Included as a bonus game bundled with the X68000 port of Pac-Mania.
The ghost AI is very off, with the ghosts rarely attacking Pac-Man.

Port of Pac-Man for MZ-700/1200 computers.

The Xbox Live version of Pac-Man is a direct port of the arcade original, but fixes the kill screen on level 256, making the game playable beyond that level. It also adds a score board.

Namco All-Stars: Pac-Man

Unlike most other Pac-Man PC ports, the Namco All-Stars port do not use emulation and it's similar to the early iOS version of the game.

Ms. Pac-Man: Maze Madness

Professor Pac learns that the witch, Mesmerelda, has seized control of the Enchanted Castle using black magic and from there is planning on stealing all four Gems of Virtue (Generosity; Truth; Wisdom; Courage) to control the "four wonders" (areas of Pac-Land). He creates a device called a Pactrometer which allows Ms. Pac-Man to go to these areas to recover the gems before Mesmerelda can get them first.

Midway Manufacturing was founded in 1958 in Chicago as a manufacturer of arcade amusement games. The company was purchased by pinball manucaturer Bally in 1969.

Midway was among the earliest companies to enter the video game market, producing their first game Winner in 1973 during the Pong arcade boom. Aside from a few early clones the company mostly relied on imports, contractors and other Bally-owned subsidiaries, such as Dave Nutting Associates, for designing their games. An internal team was established circa 1980-1981; their first game was Kick-Man, released in 1981.

In 1982 the company became Bally-Midway after Bally merged its pinball division into Midway.
