Super Mario Bros. NES

Nintendo World Championships 1990

In the year 1990, Nintendo held a now rather famous video game competition called Nintendo World Championships as part of the Powerfest traveling video game festival. Contestants would compete against each other in a triathlon of the NES titles Super Mario Bros, Rad Racer, and Tetris. The ROMs themselves were modified to suit the competition, and the winners would be determined by an overall score count from all three games. High placing winners took home a cash prize amongst other goodies. However, the finalists of this competition each took home their own copy of the specially made ROM on a standard NES cartridge. Another issue of the cartridge, colored in a golden tint similar to The Legend of Zelda cartridge, was even more elusive and was only distributed as a prize giveaway in Nintendo Power Magazine. Today, these two cartridge variations are some of the most elusive and sought after video games in history and are often considered a holy grail of video game collecting. As of recent years, only 116 gray cartridges and 26 golden cartridges are known to have ever been printed.

NES Classic Edition

Super Mario Bros.

A side scrolling 2D platformer and first entry in the Super Mario franchise, Super Mario Bros. follows Italian plumber Mario as he treks across many levels of platforming challenges featuring hostile enemies to rescue Princess Peach from the evil king Bowser.

Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels

Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels is a direct sequel to Super Mario Bros. Not to be confused with the western Super Mario Bros. 2, this sequel to Super Mario Bros. is very much an expansion to the original, with many reused graphics and concepts, though new ones are also present. The game was initially released for the Japan-only Family Computer Disk System.

Super Mario Bros. 2

Super Mario Bros. 2, 2D platformer and sequel to Super Mario Bros. (1985), features 4 selectable characters (Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Toad) as they navigate the dream world of Subcon to defeat the evil toad king Wart. Super Mario Bros. 2 features different ways interacting with enemies and the world, including an object carrying mechanic and more intricate level designs.

Super Mario Bros. 3

Super Mario Bros. 3, the third entry in the Super Mario Bros. series and Super Mario franchise, sees Mario or Luigi navigate a nonlinear world map containing platforming levels and optional minigames and challenges. The game features more diverse movement options and new items alongside more complex level designs and boss battles.

Super Mario Land

Super Mario Land is the first Mario's outing on the Game Boy. It is a side-scrolling platformer much in the vein of the previous Super Mario Bros. This time, Mario must save Princess Daisy, rather than Princess Toadstool, from her kidnapper Tatanga, a mysterious spaceman. The game follows largely the same formula of its aforementioned predecessor, with Mario defeating enemies by jumping on them and collecting coins and power ups by hitting floating blocks, with each world leading up to a boss fight which is defeated using by collapsing the floor. A unique feature of this installment is two scrolling shoot-'em-up levels, the first of which Mario pilots a submarine, and the second an aeroplane.

Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins

Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins is a platforming game for the Game Boy and the sequel to Super Mario Land. It also marks the debut of Mario's self-proclaimed arch rival Wario, who would later become a recurring character in the Mario series as well as a protagonist in his own series. The game features new graphics, power-ups, challenges, and a completely original storyline.

Super Mario

Mario Clash

Mario Clash is the first 3D stereoscopic Mario game released for the Virtual Boy. The game is a return to the style of the original Mario Bros. To progress through the game, Mario must knock enemies off platforms using Turtle Shells. There are always two Koopas; if one gets knocked off, another one takes its place. Many enemies need to be hit from the side, thus Mario must throw shells from the background to the foreground and vice-versa in order to knock them off.

Kaettekita Mario Bros.

Kaettekita Mario Bros. is an updated version of Mario Bros. that was released only in Japan. It had several new features including new levels and the option to save high scores. Excluding ports, this is the last Mario Famicom game. It was co-published by Nagatanien, a food company, and contains in-game advertising.

Mario's Cement Factory

Mario's Cement Factory is a Game & Watch game. Two versions of the game were produced: the first was for the Game & Watch Table Top and the second was a more conventional New Wide Screen Game & Watch. In both versions, Mario's mission in the cement factory is to open doors to prevent cement containers from overflowing. To get to the different containers, Mario has to jump onto moving platforms. The game was remade as a downloadable DSiWare title.

Punch Ball Mario Bros.

Punch Ball Mario Bros. is very similar to Mario Bros., but with new objects called Punch Balls that could now be thrown to stun enemies. Once stunned, the hit enemy could be hit like normal. The details of the licensing of this game are not clear, but Punch Ball Mario Bros. is probably one of the earliest licensed Mario games. It is unknown why Hudson Soft was permitted the rights to and chose to make the game.

Mario's Bombs Away

Mario's Bombs Away is a game for the Game & Watch. It was one of the six games made for the Panorama line. The game involves Mario, a soldier in this game, on a mission to receive a bomb from his buddy on the left side of the screen and carry it to his troop on the other side. The enemy is waiting in the trees in his path, so he must keep his bomb away from their torches.

Mario Bros.

Mario Bros. is a title for the Game & Watch. Despite its name, it has no similarity to the arcade game Mario Bros. Instead of plumbing, Mario and Luigi are working at a bottling factory and must prepare packages of bottles to load onto a delivery truck. This game, played on the Multi Screen model of the Game & Watch, a few months before the much more popular arcade title, making it the first game to feature Luigi.

New Super Mario Bros.

New Super Mario Bros. is a side-scrolling 2.5D action-adventure platformer game for the Nintendo DS, starring Mario and Luigi. The game features a solo story mode with Mario or Luigi, a two-player wireless game Mario Vs. Luigi, as well as a minigame mode for up to four players. The gameplay of New Super Mario Bros. is very much like that of the classic 2D platformers, mostly Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario Bros. 3, and substantially builds upon them to create gameplay both classic and contemporary. As the game is on DS, the touch screen allows players to store an additional power-up and view the distance still to go in a level.

Classic NES Series: Super Mario Bros.

Classic NES Series: Super Mario Bros. takes you back to the very first battle between Mario and Bowser. Now on the Game Boy Advance, you can relive all the mushroom-eating, Koopa-stomping action from the original game. Always strive for the high score while jumping on top of flag poles, pipes, and bricks. This time, two players can alternate play with a single Game Pak or with GBAs linked by a Game Boy Advance Game Link Cable.

All Night Nippon Super Mario Bros.

All Night Nippon Super Mario Bros. was a promotional item given out as a contest prize by the Japanese radio show All Night Nippon to celebrate its twentieth year on the air. It is mainly a graphical hack of Super Mario Bros., although a handful of levels are from Super Mario Bros. 2. Some of the games sprites have been changed to look like famous Japanese celebrities and other people related to the All-Night Nippon program.

Peach & Daisy: The Royal Games

Peach & Daisy: The Royal Games is a hack which allows you to play as Peach or Daisy in Super Mario! Some of the enemy sprites have been redesigned and all the levels have been redone!

Super Mario Bros. Deluxe

Vs. Super Mario Bros.

Vs. Super Mario Bros. is a two-player VS. System version of Super Mario Bros. This game has higher gameplay difficulty than the original Super Mario Bros., with fewer warp zones and power-ups, and more enemies. Six new levels were created for the game, all of which were reused in Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels.

Kirby's Adventure 2

One evening, Kirby had a strange dream. He had a dream of a long, long stairway leading up to a door. As soon as the door opened, he was confronted with a world he had never seen before, spreading out as far as his eyes could see. When he strained his ears to listen, he heard a faint voice saying “Welcome to the land of dreams. We have been cursed by Nightmare, he stole the Dream Rod and cast a completely evil spell. We have been awaiting your arrival. Please defeat Nightmare and return the land of dreams to its natural state. Nightmare has placed Meta Knight under his control (kono ko kono ko sa kudo kai kona misu saku ni kona misu ka ku.), to guard the Dream Rod, be wary Kirby!” Kirby must now gain the Dream Rod and break the curse!

When Kirby entered the world, he lost his ability to copy. However, the Dream Rod, with its last bit of power give Kirby the ability to use Dream Halos.

Super Mario Bros. for the Game & Watch was a game that was released on the Crystal Screen and New Wide Screen unit. While the exact date of its release is unknown, it can be confirmed that it was released sometime in June of 1986 and March of 1988. A special edition of the game, which came with a winner certificate, a license card, and battery cover stickers, and a copy of the game in a Diskun-shaped case was given away in August of 1987.

Super Mario Bros. is an LCD game watch based off of the NES original. It was released in 1989 as the first of four Mario Nelsonic Game Watches. The game received a direct sequel in the Super Mario Bros. 3 game watch.

Super Mario Bros. Special: 35th Anniversary Edition

Super Mario Bros. Special is a follow-up to Super Mario Bros, originally released in Japan in 1986 for the home computer market. The game features 32 all new levels, 5 new enemies and 5 new power-ups. Due to limitations of the PC hardware, the game engine was quite poor in comparison to the Famicom/NES original. Most notable was the lack of scrolling; the PC version would instead show each screen one at a time.

This port brings the levels, new enemies and power-ups back to the Famicom/NES engine. Also included are most of the unique background changes and other features not possible with the original SMB engine. The end result is a much more playable game that feels like a legitimate sequel.

Journey to the West: A Super Mario Bros. ROM Hack

Tonkachi Mario is a bootleg kaizo rom hack of Super Mario Bros. made with Tonkachi Editor, an unlicensed code editor for the Famicom. It is currently the earliest known rom hack of Super Mario Bros, alongside being the first hack of the kaizo genre, dating back to 1987.

TCA is a hack featuring level changes, animation, and a bunch of assembly hacks to change the game into something new. This hack has the same level of difficulty as the original Super Mario Bros, and I do hope you can enjoy it without savestates.

There is a catch however, since it is only a short game (4 levels) you only start off with one life. However, there are lives scattered though all 4 levels.

Hello there! You’re probably here because you’re looking for a fun hack of Super Mario Bros, right? If so, Super Mario Bros HF could be just for you. Perhaps the main focus of SMBHF is the difficulty. Most hacks that redo levels (at least the ones that I’ve tried) make the game nearly impossible! I’ve had quite a few games where I couldn’t get past the first few levels without savestates. In my opinion, games like these are just not fun. How can you enjoy a game if you have to keep saving after each major jump? I don’t think you can.

That is why SMBHF’s levels are about as difficult as the original game’s. You will NOT find ultra-hard levels in SMBHF; if you can beat Super Mario Bros, you can beat SMBHF. These levels were created for the gamer’s enjoyment, not for the gamer’s frustration. Each level (1-1 through 8-4) has been changed. Some have been changed moreso than others, but each has been significantly altered.

The lesser focus of SMBHF is graphic changing. Some major graphic changes include: New floor tile, New underwater tile, New “?” blocks, New brick graphics (Borrowed from SMB2J), and others. There are also some minor graphic changes that you may notice throughout the game. (And yes, those lines on Mario’s face are longer sideburns.)

Hebereke: Rescue O-Chan

In this hack, you play as Hebe from the Hebereke game series. He goes on a short adventure to rescue one of his friends, O-Chan, who was kidnapped by the Muu Cat.

This hack has 5 levels, and it was an entry for the SMB Jam, which got 2nd place, with 11.5 out of 25 points (first place got 15, and another entry got 16.5, but said entry would not go under winners).

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island is a platform video game acting as a prequel to 1990's Super Mario World. The game casts players as Yoshi as he escorts Baby Mario through 48 levels in order to reunite him with his brother Luigi, who had been kidnapped by Baby Bowser's minions.
