For the fourth volume of the CD-Rom trivia game show, the You Don't Know Jack crew decided to throw out the YDKJ rule book and start fresh! This ain't your daddy’s You Don't Know Jack! Suffice to say, you can take any preconceived notions you've had about the series and chuck 'em down an open elevator shaft because volume 4 is going to take you on the ride of your life!

The Jellyvision Lab, Inc. is an American software company based in Chicago, Illinois. Founded in 1989, and as a video game development company by Harry Gottlieb in 1995, Jellyvision has since transitioned to creating benefits guidance software.

Jellyvision was originally founded in 1989 as an educational media company, later pivoting to develop video games. Founder Harry Gottlieb created the CD-ROM game You Don't Know Jack in 1995, which became a massive success and established a franchise of You Don’t Know Jack titles from 1995 to 1998. Facing a major shift in the computer game market, as players moved from personal computers to home consoles, Jellyvision shuttered in 2001.

Later that year, Gottlieb launched a new company called the Jellyvision Lab, with a focus on developing business software inspired by You Don’t Know Jack's voice-driven interface. In 2009, Jellyvision developed the first version of ALEX, an interactive conversation that helps employees choose their benefits. The success of ALEX spurred Jellyvision's growth, and as of 2019 is the company's primary business focus, expanding to offer an interactive HSA product and year-round financial guidance.

In 2008, the original Jellyvision Games was relaunched as a subsidiary of the Jellyvision Lab. It spun off into its own company in 2011, and rebranded as Jackbox Games in 2013.

Jellyvision

Berkeley Systems was a San Francisco Bay Area software company co-founded in 1987 by Wes Boyd and Joan Blades. It made money early on by performing contract work for the National Institutes of Health, specifically in making modifications to the Macintosh so that it could be used by partially sighted or blind people. Several of these Access programs were licensed by Apple Computer and added to the operating system. Perhaps the most ambitious of these technologies was a program that could read the Macintosh screen, called outSPOKEN, which won a technology award from the Smithsonian in 1990.

The first commercial success for Berkeley Systems was a virtual desktop product for the Macintosh called Stepping Out. Given the small size of the first Macintosh screens, this product had some use and the idea was widely copied. The much bigger success was After Dark, a modular screen saver that included flying toasters, and the first of its kind to be sold. The idea was brought to Berkeley Systems by Jack Eastman and Patrick Beard. Eastman was later put in charge of software development at Berkeley Systems.

Berkeley Systems' best-selling product, the trivia game You Don't Know Jack, was developed by Jellyvision, based on their award-winning children's educational film "The Mind's Treasure Chest". You Don't Know Jack brought that program's model of interactive learning, engaging structure and pacing, and host character into the commercial mainstream. It also brought graphics, sound editing, and marketing to Berkeley; production of the show continued at Jellyvision's Chicago studios.

They also made other lesser-known software titles, such as Launch Pad, a desktop replacement for kids, and Expresso Calendar and Address Book.

Based in the old Pacific Bell building on Rose Street at Shattuck Avenue in Berkeley, California, Berkeley Systems grew to 120 employees and US$30 million annual revenue before it was acquired by the Sierra On-Line division of CUC International in 1997 for $13.8 million. Vivendi Universal’s subsequent acquisition of Sierra, and a host of similar enterprises, enjoined diverse competing sales and marketing departments with one sole directive: sell Web banner advertisements. As a result, Berkeley Systems became the U.S. headquarters of French-owned Flipside.com. In early 2000, Berkeley Systems was folded into the fledgling Los Angeles–based gambling site iWin.com, per the terms of that site's acquisition by Vivendi.

Boyd and Blades went on to found the liberal political group MoveOn.org in 1998. Blades also later co-founded MomsRising.org with Kristin Rowe-Finkbeiner in 2006.

Berkeley Systems

Sierra Entertainment, Inc. (formerly On-Line Systems and Sierra On-Line, Inc.) was an American video game developer and publisher founded in 1979 by Ken and Roberta Williams. The company is known for pioneering the graphic adventure game genre, including the first such game, Mystery House. It is known for its graphical adventure game series King's Quest, Space Quest, Police Quest, Gabriel Knight, Leisure Suit Larry, and Quest for Glory, and as the original publisher of Valve's Half-Life series.

After seventeen years as an independent company, Sierra was acquired by CUC International in February 1996 to become part of CUC Software. However, CUC International was caught in an accounting scandal in 1998, and many of the original founders of Sierra including the Williamses left the company. Sierra remained as part of CUC Software as it was sold and renamed several times over the next few years. Sierra was formally disestablished as a company and reformed as a division of this group in August 2004. The former CUC Software group was acquired by Vivendi and branded as Vivendi Games in 2006. The Sierra division continued to operate through Vivendi Games's merger with Activision to form Activision Blizzard on July 10, 2008, but was shut down later that year. The Sierra brand was revived by Activision in 2014 to re-release former Sierra games and some independently developed games.

Sierra On-Line

Previously a part of Jellyvision Games Inc., Jackbox Games was established as a separate subsidiary entity in 2013. The company is best known for their trivia comedy series You Don't Know Jack. Jackbox Games focuses on party and comedy games which have been released on a number of platforms, including PC, Xbox One, and PS4. They are based in Chicago, Illinois and have been producing games for over 25 years.
